The bench and back...

...this is what we said as we stepped out into the cumbrian rain the other night, we agreed, darn it we practically set it in stone that we would only go so far as the picnic bench by the river then back home to our nice warm house...

Well that was all very well and good, however we failed to set out which route we would take through the streets, trails, ginnels and footpaths of Ulverston.

*some time later* (about an hour)

... we arrived, slightly wet, and quite frankly in need of some sustenance, at our bench destination. Taking a look at the bench with its graffiti, and general overgrown look we didn't look too hopeful of a good quality seating and dining experience...

We each picked a side and took a seat. Fairly surprised! Was our initial thought. Plenty of table space for our large hamper of  4 china plates, 4 crystal wine glasses, fizzy drinks and enough food to feed a large number of people - assuming they only eat 1 crisp (potato chip for you Americans) each.

We discussed the merits of the view we  had each chosen, I had a view through some trees towards the river where you could just and so see some of the running water, but the sound of  the water was nice. On the opposing side there was a view up a banking towards some trees where there was a rope swing (well a piece of rope hanging from a tree), and some more benches. 3 other benches and two trails, this is probably not a place to come for a secluded picnic.

The Bench had large comfy seats (but no back), the tabletop had enough space for a family of 4 or even 6 at a push!

BenchMark: 4/5, some of the overgrown grass around the bench and graffiti and lack of a bench back to rest against lets this bench down slightly, but is made up for by the table.

Bonus rating. BearAttackLikely: Low. I would say the chances of a Yogi Bear type character running off with your pic-a-nic basket is low, however be on the lookout for those cheeky birds trying to nab your sarnie!
